Rahul Muttineni

Software engineer, language designer, and founder.

Rahul Muttineni is a software engineer and language designer, best known as the creator and lead developer of Eta — a pure, lazy, statically-typed dialect of Haskell that runs on the JVM. He co-founded TypeLead, Inc., where he served as CTO, to build a business around Eta, growing it from a Summer of Code project (originally named GHCVM) into a compiler that translates GHC's STG intermediate language to JVM bytecode with a strongly-typed FFI for safe Java interop. He has since worked on transaction-processing systems in the blockchain space, and speaks regularly on functional programming, concurrency, and language implementation.

Experience

Director of Transaction Processing · Symbiont

2020 – 2023

Worked on transaction-processing systems for a blockchain smart-contract platform.

Co-founder & CTO · TypeLead, Inc.

2016 – 2020

Co-founded TypeLead to commercialize Eta and bring pure functional programming to the enterprise JVM. Led the compiler, runtime, and tooling architecture.

Open source

Eta · Creator & lead developer

2016 – 2022

A pure, lazy, statically-typed dialect of Haskell on the JVM. Forked GHC, compiled the STG intermediate language to JVM bytecode, and built a strongly-typed FFI for safe Java interop, plus the Etlas build tool and an IntelliJ plugin.
